Homeopathy in the Media

Homeopathy is attracting lots of negative publicity at the moment, and organised campaigns are actually targeting individual  homeopaths, with the aim of stopping them making any claims in their publicity materials about the efficacy of homeopathy.

As a profession, homeopaths are asking why this vociferous and sustained campaign is continuing, and who benefits from the restriction of this 200 year-old successful healing discipline.

Homeopathy has been an accepted part of the NHS since 1948.

Homeopathy costs the NHS 0.02% of it's annual budget. (£4,000,000). This includes homeopathic remedies  (£152,000) and the upkeep and staffing of the homeopathic hospitals in London, Glasgow and Bristol, where patient satisfaction with their treatment exceeds 70%.

Spending on homeopathy is a tiny fraction of the monies wasted on unused pharmaceuticals every year.  (£300,000,000)

The NHS spent over £300,000,000 on management consultants in 2009.

6,000,000 people in the UK use homeopathy.

The detractors of homeopathy are trying to influence these 6,000,000 people, ridiculing their personal experiences of successful treatment, implying how they can and can't make individual decisions about their own health and well-being, and trying to influence the rest of the population with a campaign of mis-information.

They say homeopathy is no better than placebo, (and as yet, no one fully understands the placebo effect), but the evidence shows that homeopathy is more effective than placebo, and homeopathy works on babies and works for animals, which makes a nonsense of the placebo argument.

They say there is no evidence that homeopathy works. This is untrue.   In actual  fact there is a wealth of evidence that homeopathy works.

They fail to say that their is insufficient evidence to support the efficacy of 51% of the most commonly used interventions of conventional medicine according to the BMJ review of clinical evidence.

They refer to a report from the government Science and Technology Committee, published in Feb 2010, which concluded there was no evidence for homeopathy. This was a hugely biased report, signed by only 3 of the 14 member committee, one of whom was not even a member of the committee at the time of the enquiry. This report was strongly criticised by Lord Baldwin of Bewdley, (House of Lords Science and Technology committee) and over 60 MP's signed an early day motion against the report.  The homeopathic professional bodies were not called to give verbal evidence at the hearings.

The campaigns against homeopathy are led by members of an organisation called Sense about Science, which is partly funded by the pharmaceutical industry.

Leading scientists, (eg 2 nobel prize winners) claim that the arguments put forward by the detractors, about homeopathic dilution, are ill informed, in the light of the most recent scientific discoveries.

In Cuba, in 2008, the Finlay Institute, conducted an experiment with 2,400,000 people using a homeopathic preventative in place of a vaccine against leptospirosis. It was significantly cheaper and significantly more effective than previous vaccination programmes. The Findlay institute could not get their research published.  This work is ongoing, with continuing impressive outcomes.

In the third world, where many people have no access to clean water, sufficient food, healthy living conditions, and pharmaceutical medicines, homeopaths are working successfully with a wide range of conditions, which detractors in the UK are trying to sabotage with misinformation, and with calls for bans, because they say, homeopaths are giving false hope to sick people. These same sick people sometimes walk miles to outreach clinics both for treatments and to say thank you for their homeopathic treatment.

Homeopaths believe that if homeopathy was used extensively in hospitals, and in GP practices, huge sums of money could be saved by the NHS. This would obviously affect drug company profits.

Again, we ask why this vociferous and sustained campaign is continuing, and who benefits from the restriction of this 200 year old successful, safe  and increasingly popular healing discipline.

If these people, who campaign against homeopathy, are really concerned about the health of the nation, why do they not turn their attention to something that might really benefit us all?  Why do they not investigate the safety of fluoride in our water, mercury in our dental amalgams, aspartame in our foods, GM crops? All of these would be legitimate investigative  campaigns. I challenge them to do something of real value and leave the rest of us alone to continue to have the freedom to make our own individual choices about our health care.
