or.. Meet the Students

The Lakeland College has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the largest homœopathic training colleges in the U.K. As we have grown, our staff team has expanded to include a network of course tutors, regional tutors and clinical training supervisors. Whilst our students numbers have also grown considerably, we usually limit our group sizes to twenty students to ensure adequate individual attention can be given.

The College Principal

Anne Waters has a Masters Degree in Special Education and before starting The Lakeland College in 1993 with Ian Watson, Anne was the Headteacher of a Residential Special School for boys with Emotional and Behaviourial Difficulties. Seeing homeopathy work with children led Anne to train as a homeopath and change her career. Anne oversees all aspects of the college administration and the curriculum with support from an extensive staff team. She regularly attends meetings at a national level, respresenting the college at the Homeopathic Course Providers Forum and maintains good links with the National Registering Bodies. In April 2009 Anne spoke about Common Sense and Diversity in Homeopathic Education at an international conference held by the European Council for Homeopathy in Leuven in Belgium. Anne is currently a member of two international working groups looking at teaching approaches and teachers' development in homeopathic education and at assessment. She has studied nutrition extensively and runs a busy practice combining homœopathy with flower essences and nutritional support.

Harriet also supports Noreen, edits the college newsletter, creates all publicity and advertising material, and is also a member of the student support team involved at college weekends. Harriet has a homeopathic practice in Penrith, where she specialises in treating families. From the end of May 2011 Harriet will be on maternity leave.

Clare Landon is a graduate from our Ambleside training course, and enjoys the contact with students and prospective students that she gets from working in the office. Clare works two days a week and is responsible for all matters pertaining to college weekends. Clare has two daughters, Amelia and Martha who occupy her time fully for the rest of the week.

The Course Tutors

We have a dedicated core team of tutors who provide most of our teaching on the college weekends. In addition, we have regular visiting guest tutors who are experienced in a particular area. Our core team comprises:

Deirdre Owen practices in Workington, Cockermouth, Dalton and Seascale, where she has taught many evening groups over the years. Deirdre has been studying with the Guild of Homeopathy recently. "I love working with students in the tutor groups, helping to build their confidence as they start out in practice. I think it is important to be yourself in practice and to be real with your patients. I also enjoy the materia medica side of homeopathy enormously."

Beth Moon trained at the North West College of Homeopathy in Manchester and has been working as a homeopath in Cumbria since 1995. She has several years experience running student teaching clinics and enjoys the hands on, practical side of helping students to develop their clinical skills. Beth particulatly enjoys homeopathic philosophy and exploring that within the evolution of health and disease. Alongside homeopathy, Beth is passionate about woods, trees, walking, flowers, growing organic food and enjoying the pace of life on her canal boat.

Lorraine Grayston is a homœopathic and shamanic practitioner running busy practices in London and Devon. She has many years experience working with individuals and groups. "I am passionate about using a combination of the magic of homœopathic prescribing and shamanic techniques to help people visit their stuck places and transform them, to touch in on their beauty, strengthen those places, and to reclaim their wholeness and vital energy. I love working with groups and finding imaginative ways to engage people in the learning process.”

Angie Jackson is a homeopath and flower essence practitioner with a busy clinic in Kendal and a successful business selling flower essences - Healthlines. "I love to encourage those I am working with to go deeper into more subtle and inner realms."

Hilary Barnett is a graduate of our Practitioner Development Training. After several years of being the student supporter and clinic and tutorial organiser Hilary has now joined the London teaching team. She also runs regional tutorials and student training clinics in London and in Ewell Village, Surrey.
"I particularly enjoy working with the students, watching and helping them develop their personal strengths and to realise their individual potential."

Lee Pollack has been practising homeopathy in southeast London for over 12 years, " I am particularly excited about homeopathy as an energy medicine. I use other energy disciplines such as the chakra system, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and meditation techniques to help me to understand why the body has produced particular physical symptoms. Everything happens for a reason. And if we can identify the underlying causes of a physical ailment, then anything is possible. That has been my experience."

Simon Taffler is a practicing homeopath, with a career that has encompassed clinical practice and training in England, Israel, Paraguay, Sri Lanka, and North America and, teaching and research at colleges in the UK and USA. He opened the Life Works clinic in London in 1985. Concurrently, he is completing a PhD dissertation on the education of homeopathy at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Simon graduated in England from the School of Homeopathy and the Dynamis School for Advanced Homeopathic Studies.

Bob Wooler has a busy homoeopathic practice in Worcester, and a specialist HIV/AIDS Clinic in Liverpool. He is also a Reiki Master and Colour Therapist. He has taught at a number of Homoeopathic Colleges, both classical and non-classical, and now is a core member of the Lakeland College. A student of the Ancient Wisdom Teachings (The Science of Energies) for over 35 years, Bob is the Director of Esoteric Studies for the movement, Universal World Harmony, and is the administrator for "The Quest" an international correspondence course in Esoteric Studies founded in 1960.

Myriam Shivadikar's journey in homeopathy began with a trip to Sri Lanka in 1984. She returned to London and studied Classical Homeopathy at COH. She has been practising in the UK since 1992. She has had a radio slot with the BBC and was part of the editorial team for the magazines of the UKHMA and the ARH. In 1998 she started teaching at the College of Practical Homeopathy and became the Vice-Principal. She now teaches at 5 of the main homeopathic colleges both in the UK and abroad. Myriam practises in Finchley using an eclectic combination of therapies, diet and nutrition.

Dave Evans has been in practice for over 20 years and currently works in Manchester. With a background in nursing, Dave delivers much of our anatomy and physiology curriculum and is one of our most dynamic and popular tutors.

Our core tutor team is complemented by an extended group of regular guest tutors with skills in specific areas. Including Steve Johnson, Jo Ketteman, Mandy Adams, Helen Johnson, Ann Callaghan and Jayne Johnson.

The Student Support Team

On the college weekends we like to have a staff member available who can provide practical and personal support for our students on an individual basis, we call this person the college Guardian and the role rotates through several team members. Our Regional Coordinators are Di Belton in London and Joyce Ormesher in the Lakes. Di and Joyce organise all clinical placements and all evening tutorial groups. They coordinate and support the work of an extensive team of regional tutors and clinicians. At college weekends the support structure they offer is enhanced by Harriet Wood (see Admin Staff).

Di Belton is the London Student Supporter and organises the clinics in London.

Joyce Ormesher is the Lakes Student Supporter

Final year case assessment

Part of the graduation criteria is that all students in their third year must write up five cases each with two followups. In order to facilitate maximum learning from this process cases are submitted one at a time and are reviewed by our staff.

Case feedback takes place every college weekend and third year students have individual sessions on their cases, designed to support their continuing development as practitioners.
